50 Things To Say To Your Husband To Make Him Feel Great by Janel Breitenstein

50 ways to encourage your man, ABC's of Love, bless your husband, blessing your husband, covenant marriage, Fighting Feminism, godly wisdom, pleasing your husband, wise words

A woman’s words are powerful, even if she doesn’t believe they are. We women are influencers (just like our sister Eve). We can use our influence for good or for evil. What ways have you used your words to build up your husband today?

Janel Breitenstein has some help for those of us who can’t think of anything positive to say!

1. Thanks for doing that. It means a lot to me when you serve me in little ways like that.

2. I am such a different woman because of the way you _____ (love me, gently lead me, make me feel secure, etc.).

3. I know you and I haven’t been seeing eye-to-eye lately. But I want to let you know that I accept you whether I agree with you or not, and I’m committed to working on our relationship so we both feel understood and secure.

4. I don’t have a bit of a headache tonight. Interested?

5. I can’t believe how _____ you are. You are so clearly gifted in that area.

6. I’m seeing lately that you may not feel very _____, but I hope you know I still respect you deeply.

7. The way you _____ is such a good complement to me. God knew what I needed when He gave me you.

8. I love it when you wear that.

9. You are my best friend.

10. I am more in love with you than ever.

11. I want to go out with you. Are you free on _____ night?

12. No matter how royally you mess up, I’ll always be glad you’re mine, I’ll forgive you, and I’ll love your socks off.

13. I got the car washed and serviced today, hoping it would just take a little of the load off of you.

14. I’m sorry. Will you please forgive me for _____?

15. It is so cool to watch the man you’ve become since we’ve been married.

16. I’m proud of you.

17. What would sound great for dinner tonight?

18. I forgive you. And I won’t bring this up again, okay?

19. Got a minute? There’s something I want to show you in the bedroom.

20. You handled that incredibly well.

21. You’re right.

22. Got your favorite snack at the grocery store!

23. Just wanted to let you know I’m praying for you.

24. I trust you.

25. Let’s put the kids to bed early.

26. Go ahead and sleep in tomorrow.

27. I had no idea you could do that! You continue to impress me.

28. What do you think?

29. Can I give you a massage?

30. To the kids: I love your dad so much. He is so _____.

31. I love being around you.

32. I got a babysitter tonight!

33. I think you have so much to offer, and I can see it in the ways you _____.

34. I’m so glad you’re home.

35. I saw this at the store, and it made me think of you.

36. Do you feel like I’m understanding you?

37. I love doing _____ with you.

38. I stayed within the budget this month!

39. You are one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten. I am so humbled God gave me you.

40. You and me this evening: Game on.

41. I got tickets!

42. Mind if I hold your hand?

43. I made your favorite _____.

44. Why don’t you take the night off? I’ve got the kids.

45. You are so well-disciplined in _____.

46. You still take my breath away.

47. I miss you. Have a great time!

48. Our kids are so blessed to have a dad like you. I love the way you _____ them.

49. You make me so happy just by being you.

50. I love you so much.

One final note: Maybe you’re a woman who initiates a lot of love for your man, but tenderness is not often reciprocated. Maybe you’re reading this under the burden of a husband who doesn’t serve you or protect you or cherish you. I want to compassionately encourage you: Jesus gave without mutual gain, too—and that puts you in some pretty good company. Ask God to give you remarkable, gentle grace as you lift up your spouse in prayer, and as you meet everyday struggles against resentment and possibly even injustice. Our God is the God who sees (Genesis 21:15-21).

What I’ve Learned from Wise Mothers

mother lifting child
We all want to leave a legacy of wisdom and faith to our families but how do we accomplish that? One moment at a time.

Some families are full of good “fruit” and should be emulated. If you know of a family whose children have embraced their parents values, who are joyful and confident and secure, be sure to watch and learn from the woman who is mothering those children!

Here are some bits of wisdom I have learned from other women over the years;

images silhouette of children swinging

*Let your husband be a man and parent like one. He may be more matter-of-fact and not take the time to explain things like you do but his influence is essential in the life of your child and shows forth the heart of God in a different way than you do.

*Sometimes being a very involved mother means stepping back and allowing your child to experience consequences. Ask the Lord for wisdom for the right timing. A teen who keeps friends waiting may have to be left behind on an important day. A younger child may need to learn that leaving a favorite toy out in the rain ruins the toy and that it doesn’t get replaced. Look for these moments and choose to allow your child to feel uncomfortable under your guiding hand.

*Each stage of childhood and development is different. Even with a large family it is easy to lose touch with the changes your child is growing through. Find a good book full of trusted advice and refer to it again and again in order to fortify yourself for the next stage of life. Rejoice and be glad in the uniqueness of God’s creation in the life of a child.

*Wise mothers learn self-control so that they can act instead of react to all the ups and downs of raising children. It is worth the hard work of developing your own character in order to be a better mother.

*Pray for wisdom so that you can determine if your child just made a childish mistake or if he refused to listen and obey. You do not want to overlook sin but you also don’t want to overreact to childish mistakes.

*Joyful children have parents who choose to be joyful even through the ups and downs of life. Choose to be a smiling mother!

*Don’t forget what it was like to be a child.

*You are the best mother for your child. Wise mothers know that no matter how hard parenting can get, they were meant to be the mother of their child. Embrace this truth.

Pray! The God of grace will give you wisdom. He has entrusted to you an eternal soul…will He not gently lead you?

Lord,

We pray for our husbands today. We pray for their vision, their goals, their hopes and their dreams

at_work_01 clock Picture credit

We pray that they would be known as men who have great hope in a holy God. We pray that they would set their minds on Your word and that they would live according to Your truth.

Give them a vision for what You have created them to accomplish in this life. Thank you, God, that You have a specific purpose for each man in this world. You have created our husbands with unique gifts and talents and You have a plan for their lives. We pray that You would guide them into their specific niche so that they would find great satisfaction in knowing that there is a reason why they were put on this earth.

We pray that they would be men of deep peace and great joy as they live and work in the calling and vocation that You have put them in.

In Your son’s name,

Amen

A Reminder from 1 Corinthians 13

Christmas, godly wisdom, the Holy Bible, trusting God

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

images love never fails
If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops cooking to hug the child.

Love sets aside decorating to kiss the husband.

Love is kind through harried and tired.

Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way.

Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.

Love bears all things, believes all things hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust…but giving the gift of love will endure.

Yours Is the Day, Lord, Yours is the Night; My Review of a Prayer Book from Thomas Nelson

_225_350_Book.719.cover

Prayer is a discipline and can be hard work so that’s why I chose this compilation of prayers from Thomas Nelson publishers to review this month.

Yours Is the Day, Lord, Yours Is the Night
provides the reader structure and help for prayer times with a morning and evening prayer for each day of the year. The prayers are selected to reflect the seasons and the liturgical calendar.

I have found that during times of great struggle and worry that it is most helpful to have written prayers to read and to pray. These prayers help me to calm my mind and focus my heart and then I can go on to pray my own thoughts to God.

This book of prayers was collected from Protestant, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox sources; including prayers from each century and every continent! Some are not particularly helpful but are, perhaps, entertaining such as this traditional Scottish prayer (that my father actually learned as a child),

“From ghoulies and ghosties
and long-legged beasties,
and things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!”
_225_350_Book.719.cover

Other prayers I found rich in meaning and scripturally robust such as this one from Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882);

O Lord Jesus Christ,
who when on earth wast ever occupied about Thy Father’s business:
grant that I may not grow weary in well-doing.
Give me grace to do all in Thy name;
be Thou the beginning and the end of all;
the pattern whom I follow,
the Redeemer in whom I trust,
the Master whom I serve,
the Friend to whom I look for sympathy.
May I never shrink from my duty through any fear of man;
make me faithful unto death;
and bring me at last into Thy eternal Presence,
where with the Father and the Holy Ghost,
Thou livest and reignest for ever.
Amen

Editors Jeanie and David Gushee have done a fine job in compiling this collection of prayers and reading through them reminded me that God has been working throughout the dawn of time and every tribe and tongue and nation to redeem mankind through Jesus Christ.

This book would make a delightful gift at Christmas time! It can be found through major retailers everywhere!

I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from BookSneeze.

ABC's of Love, blessing your husband, cooking, God keeps His promises, godly wisdom, trusting God

Lord,

We pray for the physical health of our husbands. Help us to encourage them to keep active, eat well and sleep deeply without being a nag. Give us insight and wisdom into what they need to feel better and think more clearly.

Lord, thank You for helping us discern what is truly a spiritual or emotional struggle and what problem has its roots in their physical body. Give us understanding into what unique needs our own husbands have and to creatively bless him by meeting those needs.

We want our husbands to be joyful, energetic, clear thinking men. We don’t want to mother them, instead, we want to be godly wives who “do them good and not evil” all the days of their lives.

Lord, we ask that you give us the strength and willingness to do the hard work of learning how to make tasty, nutritious meals day after day so that we can guard the health of husbands.

Help us to take the time to walk in the fresh air and enjoy the sunshine and rain with our husbands.

Give us the strength of will to say “No” to the urgent and “Yes” to the essential tasks of life. We want to bless the men whom you have given to us and we ask for Your help to do that, Lord.

In Jesus name we pray,

Amen

Happy Children

family time, godly wisdom, happy children, raising children, trusting God, wise words

How do we raise happy children? We do it one step at a time; constantly remembering that true happiness is born when we learn to walk in the ways of God.

We gently show our children the way to happiness by genuinely embracing their presence in our lives. A child can sense when his mother isn’t happy and will blame himself for her discontentment and sorrow. Learn to put on a happy face and practice contentment and joy moment by moment. God will help you.

We gently show our children the way to happiness when we look them in the eye and rejoice in who they are…not in who we hope they will become. This, too, is a work of the living God.

We gently show our children the way to happiness when we practice counting our blessings throughout the day. This teaches our children that they really do have much to thank God for even if others have more. A grateful child is a child who will easily find happiness.

We gently show our children the way to happiness when we teach them to serve others as we work beside them. A child who knows how to do hard things is a child who will rarely be bored or lonely.

Oh, Lord, remind us that we can’t fill the emptiness of our children’s souls by buying them everything they want. Instead, may we point them to you as we love and celebrate their presence in our lives.

Lord, give us a vision for our marriage. Create in us a deep conviction of the importance of our marriage not only for us but for the church and the world. May our conviction be as solid as granite and may our vision be for future generations.

Help us to see beyond this present hardship or misunderstanding or struggle and to see the big picture. Give us a depth of love for our husbands that is supernatural and goes above and beyond our own natural love.

Give us glorious marriages, Lord, so that the world will see that any sinful imitation of the union of a man and a woman in Christian marriage is false and shallow. May our marriages testify to joy, self-sacrifice and fruitfulness.

Give us strength as Christian women as we allow you to work in our weaknesses so that Your power will be perfected in our imperfect selves (2 Corinthians 12:9).

We love You, Lord Jesus, and want to give You all glory and praise and honor as You build our marriages.

In Your name we pray,

Amen

blessing your husband, Fighting Feminism, God keeps His promises, godly wisdom, strong women, trusting God

Lord,

It is an awful time in history to be a man. Men who lead and take initiative are often ridiculed for simply being men. Feminism has permeated our world with the stench of female worship and man-hatred and our families are suffering for it.

We pray that You would give our husbands the courage to be strong, Christian men; to take initiative, to lead our families in worship, and to shoulder the burden of providing for the family. It is a tough road to walk, Lord, but You have called them to it and we know You will strengthen them as they obey You.

Give them courage. Give them hope. Give them a vision of what it means to be a God-honoring man in a world that hates the distinction of male and female.

Lord, You created Male and Female and You called it good. You created the two distinct sexes to show Your glory and character in a way that would not be revealed with just Male or just Female.

Give us the joyful faith we need to live as fully feminine women so that our men are especially blessed in their calling. Show us how to be strong, Christian, feminine women without perverting our femininity in a way that is not of You.

Give us strong, scriptural words of hope to speak to our men so that they will be encouraged and inspired to keep fighting the fight of Christian manhood.

May our families, our neighborhoods and the world become more conformed to the image of Your son by the way that we live out our marriages!

In Your name we pray,

Amen
