I’ve wanted to actually read a book by Lisa Terkeurst for awhile now. I’ve heard her on the radio (she’s articulate and funny and she has that no-fair North Carolina drawl! Did ya’all know I could have had a North Carolina southern drawl? We lived there for four years and it is an easy thing to acquire!).

Unglued; 60 Days of Imperfect Progress is a devotional book so it was definitely a test for me to read it and review it since I don’t like most devotional books.

Bottom line, I liked the book. I liked it because Mrs. Terkeurst writes like she sounds; real and down-to-earth. Of course, you can’t quite hear the drawl as you read but you’ll come pretty close. The devotional is a companion book to her book by the same name.

She writes, “Connection with God is such a deeply personal and uniquely individual process. Surely it can’t be reduced to three points and a poem. But there are two words that stir me over and over: “Follow Me.”

Those words are why Lisa writes with grace and grit and her words ring true.

Each daily devotional includes a scripture, thought for the day, devotion and a closing prayer.

I recommend this book.

I received this book from Thomas Nelson publishers/Booksneeze for the purpose of review.

Oxygen for the Soul

I have a confession to make. I’ve always found the subject of prayer…um…boring. For me, the word prayer was a bit like the word budget; it sounded restrictive and dull.

I’d read the missionary stories (God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew and The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom are two that come to mind) and those people made prayer seem vital, real and exciting.

But for me? Not so much.

Yet over the years I’ve prayed a lot and seen God work. I would pray when I was in great pain, pray for others who were experiencing sorrow and sickness and pray for my children when that middle-of-the-night-anxious-worry hit me.

In other words, I was good at crisis praying.

Almost two years ago I began praying weekly with an acquaintance who was going through struggles similar to ones I had experienced. I prayed to encourage her. I marked a date on the calendar and drove to her house just to keep her going. I didn’t want her to quit.

Together, we prayed.

Honestly, in the beginning, our commitment to a regular time of prayer wavered. We shared prayer requests talked too much before we got around to a short time of prayer.

It was a struggle but we kept meeting.

We had been praying together for a year when I moved to a new city with my family and our prayer time had to become a once-a-week phone call at an awkward time of day.

Strange to say, Thursday afternoons at 3 p.m. became the only time that mutually worked for us.

One hour…once a week.

Life is busy when you are middle-aged and the parents of adults, teens, in-betweens and an almost eight-year-old but, believe it or not, one year after my move, we are still praying.

Each week I feel like I’ve gotten a deep, wonderful gulp of life-giving oxygen as I lay my burdens down.

Life is so busy that we don’t want to use up our time together with small talk so we email our requests to each other beforehand. We fight hard to keep our commitment to pray together and it… is… hard.

Life goes on, you know?

images.jpg praying wife

Each week we both give all glory to God that we have remained faithful to this one hour of prayer.

It is our life-blood, our oxygen, our giving back to God our worries, fears and problems.

We’ve seen answers and we praise Him for that but, mostly, we’ve found peace and rest in realizing that prayer is not complicated. It is (like a simple budget) not just for the “experts”.

We simply join our voices and our hearts in giving glory to our Great God. We lay our burdens down and we lift up the weak hands of others as we pray.

A faithful prayer partner is a gift from God. You might find one (like I did) through a shared trial. Ask God to bring you a sister in Christ with whom you can come to God in prayer.

“Come let us know, let us press on to know the Lord, for His coming is like the rains, like the spring rains watering the earth.” Hosea 6:9

How do you get enough oxygen for your soul?

What I’ve Learned from Wise Mothers

We all want to leave a legacy of wisdom and faith to our families but how do we accomplish that? One moment at a time.

Some families are full of good “fruit” and should be emulated. If you know of a family whose children have embraced their parents values, who are joyful and confident and secure, be sure to watch and learn from the woman who is mothering those children!

Here are some bits of wisdom I have learned from other women over the years;

images silhouette of children swinging

*Let your husband be a man and parent like one. He may be more matter-of-fact and not take the time to explain things like you do but his influence is essential in the life of your child and shows forth the heart of God in a different way than you do.

*Sometimes being a very involved mother means stepping back and allowing your child to experience consequences. Ask the Lord for wisdom for the right timing. A teen who keeps friends waiting may have to be left behind on an important day. A younger child may need to learn that leaving a favorite toy out in the rain ruins the toy and that it doesn’t get replaced. Look for these moments and choose to allow your child to feel uncomfortable under your guiding hand.

*Each stage of childhood and development is different. Even with a large family it is easy to lose touch with the changes your child is growing through. Find a good book full of trusted advice and refer to it again and again in order to fortify yourself for the next stage of life. Rejoice and be glad in the uniqueness of God’s creation in the life of a child.

*Wise mothers learn self-control so that they can act instead of react to all the ups and downs of raising children. It is worth the hard work of developing your own character in order to be a better mother.

*Pray for wisdom so that you can determine if your child just made a childish mistake or if he refused to listen and obey. You do not want to overlook sin but you also don’t want to overreact to childish mistakes.

*Joyful children have parents who choose to be joyful even through the ups and downs of life. Choose to be a smiling mother!
277604764500382815_LBDVBI3p_b
*Don’t forget what it was like to be a child.

*You are the best mother for your child. Wise mothers know that no matter how hard parenting can get, they were meant to be the mother of their child. Embrace this truth.

Pray! The God of grace will give you wisdom. He has entrusted to you an eternal soul…will He not gently lead you?

We pray for this day. It is a good day because you have given it to us, we are alive in it and we know You.

We pray that we would have hearts turned toward You today, minds focused on You and eyes opened to the many blessings and gifts that are ours in You.
You have given us so much. You have given us Your son, Jesus. You have given us the riches of Your word, the gift of the Holy Spirit who prompts us, teaches us and leads us. You have given us minds to understand and souls that long for a better eternity than this life.

Lord, You have created us to be women and women show forth Your creation in a unique way. Help us to joyfully embrace the gift of femininity.

Thank You that we are Your influencers and we leave a mark on the lives of others. Help us to use our gift of influence in a way that honors You. Keep us from being manipulative. Open our eyes to the powerful difference we can make in this world and give us Holy boldness to make a difference that glorifies You.

Lord, this is a glorious day and we dedicate it to You. We long for the day when You will make all things right and sin will no longer have dominion over us or the world. All of creation groans under the weight of sin.

Thank You for Your redemption. Thank You for loving us. images love never fails

We pray that they would be known as men who have great hope in a holy God. We pray that they would set their minds on Your word and that they would live according to Your truth.

Give them a vision for what You have created them to accomplish in this life. Thank you, God, that You have a specific purpose for each man in this world. You have created our husbands with unique gifts and talents and You have a plan for their lives. We pray that You would guide them into their specific niche so that they would find great satisfaction in knowing that there is a reason why they were put on this earth.

We pray that they would be men of deep peace and great joy as they live and work in the calling and vocation that You have put them in.

In Your son’s name,

Amen

Lord,

We pray for our husbands today. We pray for his emotional health. We pray you would protect his heart and his mind as he experiences the sorrows, joys, frustrations and trials of life. Help him to give these things to You so that he can keep a balanced perspective. Give him a steady, persevering way of looking at life and strengthen his mind so that he can tackle hard things.

Thank you that Your word says that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We pray for that kind of peace for our husbands.

Let them be known in their jobs, families, communities and churches for being strong, wise men with tender hearts. Help them to understand how to express their emotions. Lord, masculinity is under such attack and we pray that they would be masculine men who know who they are and who You created them to be.

Most of all, we pray that You would give them deep, abiding peace and joy every single day of their lives.

You are such a great God and we worship you.

In Christ’s name,

Amen

Yours Is the Day, Lord, Yours is the Night; My Review of a Prayer Book from Thomas Nelson

Catholic prayers, God keeps His promises, godly wisdom, Orthodox Prayers, prayers around the world, prayers through the centuries, Protestant prayers, reviving your prayer life, trusting God, wise words

_225_350_Book.719.cover

Prayer is a discipline and can be hard work so that’s why I chose this compilation of prayers from Thomas Nelson publishers to review this month.

Yours Is the Day, Lord, Yours Is the Night
provides the reader structure and help for prayer times with a morning and evening prayer for each day of the year. The prayers are selected to reflect the seasons and the liturgical calendar.

I have found that during times of great struggle and worry that it is most helpful to have written prayers to read and to pray. These prayers help me to calm my mind and focus my heart and then I can go on to pray my own thoughts to God.

This book of prayers was collected from Protestant, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox sources; including prayers from each century and every continent! Some are not particularly helpful but are, perhaps, entertaining such as this traditional Scottish prayer (that my father actually learned as a child),

“From ghoulies and ghosties
and long-legged beasties,
and things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!”
_225_350_Book.719.cover

Other prayers I found rich in meaning and scripturally robust such as this one from Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882);

O Lord Jesus Christ,
who when on earth wast ever occupied about Thy Father’s business:
grant that I may not grow weary in well-doing.
Give me grace to do all in Thy name;
be Thou the beginning and the end of all;
the pattern whom I follow,
the Redeemer in whom I trust,
the Master whom I serve,
the Friend to whom I look for sympathy.
May I never shrink from my duty through any fear of man;
make me faithful unto death;
and bring me at last into Thy eternal Presence,
where with the Father and the Holy Ghost,
Thou livest and reignest for ever.
Amen

Editors Jeanie and David Gushee have done a fine job in compiling this collection of prayers and reading through them reminded me that God has been working throughout the dawn of time and every tribe and tongue and nation to redeem mankind through Jesus Christ.

This book would make a delightful gift at Christmas time! It can be found through major retailers everywhere!

I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from BookSneeze.

Pilgrim Faith; Why Remembering the Pilgrims is Important

God keeps His promises, Magna Charta, Mayflower Compact, Pilgrim Faith, Separatists, Thanksgiving history, The History of Plymouth Plantation, trusting God

Today I am launching a week-long series of posts on the early settlers of Plymouth Plantation. These messages are taken from a talk I gave last year to a wonderful group of home educators (I miss you Whatcom Homeschool Association folks!).

The people we have come to remember as the Pilgrims fled from England to Holland in 1608 and then from Holland to America in 1620.

They went to Holland desperately seeking religious freedom but left because the political climate in Holland was changing and it would soon be less safe for them to be there. They also were alarmed at the growing assimilation of their children into the Dutch culture. They wanted to retain their English language and culture. They were concerned for the next generation.

The Dutch offered them free transportation to the island of Manhattan as well as a cow for each family but they refused. They wanted to remain English citizens wherever they went.

The Pilgrims had a deep faith and confidence that they belonged to God. They believed that their cause was just and walked with an uprightness that only fearless and free people can display. They stand as shining examples of people who were certain of what they believed, were unswerving in their loyalty and passionately dedicated to God whom they trusted.

I believe there are several kernels of wisdom we can draw from their lives which will make a difference for us who are living in a very different time.

The Pilgrims were generationally oriented. They were visionaries who were willing to do hard things for something greater; imparting their faith, their culture and their language to their precious children.

This brings us to our first Kernel of Wisdom; All great people live their lives with an eye toward those who are coming after them. If you are sacrificing for the next generation, you are walking in the footsteps of world changers and this view of the future will change the way you live now!

And so these determined people found financial backing (the original agreement was to work four days a week for seven years to pay off their debt but this was changed to six days a week!). They borrowed the money, promised to pay off the debt with furs and goods from the New World and set sail.

Their boats were leaky. The Speedwell had to return to shore and those who had planned to travel on it either stayed behind or chose to be crammed into the Mayflower.

The crossing was awful. Because of the problems with the Speedwell, they got a late start. A horrible storm blew them off course and their main mast was shattered. They had originally planned on landing in Virginia which had a much milder climate but, because of the storm, ended up much further North.

Yet, in the midst of it all, they gave glory to God for saving them and they praised Him for the little baby born on board who was named Oceanus!

Once they reached land (off the coast of New England) they wisely decided that they should not set foot on land without writing down what they were agreeing to as a colony. The resulting document came to be known as the Mayflower Compact and was heavily influenced by the Magna Carta (the document which limited the power of Kings in England and was a foundational document to our Constituition). These tired, sea-sick Englishmen were not uneducated! Read these words out loud.

“It was thought good that there should be an Association or Agreement, that we should combine together in one body; to submit to such Government and Governors as we should, by common consent, agree to make and choose; and set our hands to this that follows, word for word.”

This brings us to our second Kernel of Wisdom; they knew their history and borrowed wisdom and knowledge from those who had gone on before them!

It’s easy to look back on those who lived centuries before us and presume many things. The Pilgrims of Plymouth had mostly been hatters and weavers in the towns of Holland. To the men who spent drab and colorless years at a loom in Leyden, this rugged existence on the bleak New England hillside was utterly new and strange.

They weren’t well-equipped to deal with strange animals, plants, rocky hillsides and really bad New England coastal weather but in one important area they were well-prepared for hardship.

They were well read.

So, while they chopped wood, dug for clams, and struggled to discover what they could eat in the new land they thought! They thought about what others had written in hard times, they reflected on God’s word and they thought about future generations…

They were visionaries who were willing to do whatever it took while they looked beyond their immediate circumstances to something greater.

Please return to Generational Womanhood for the next part of this series! To learn more about the Pilgrims, look for a beautifully illustrated book for children entitled N.C. Wyeth’s Pilgrims with text by Robert San Souci (published by Chronicle books).
