The Empty Nest; Tea Time with Kim

older women, Titus 2, wise women

Let’s chat today with Kim who has some wisdom for those of us whose children are leaving the nest. Pull up a chair and choose your favorite tea. I’ve got the pot ready to pour! Here’s Kim!

One morning a few weeks ago, I realized that later in the day I was attending a music festival where my son was competing. It would be the last time he did such a thing because he is graduating from high school in June and starting college in September. He is the youngest of our three children. In September, I will be an “empty nester.”

This new designation has come about gradually. First, there was our daughter and that was very difficult. The first one is hard; we don’t know what to expect. When our second one left (our firstborn son), I was instructed not to cry. He is not a hugging kind of guy but I was granted one that day!
When child number three leaves I will be a seasoned pro.

Releasing our children is a natural part of parenting.
We are given these lives as gifts from God with full knowledge that some day we will release them. When we are knee deep in diapers, toddlers’ tantrums, baby food, and ear infections, it seems so very far away and, then, one day, we wake up, and here we are!

I know some women who have gone through periods of depression after their children have all left home. For those of us committed to being home full-time with our children, and who do not have a career to return to, it can be a time of uncertainty. What will we do? How will we fill our time? What does this time do to my identity as a mother? Of course, we are always mothers, and there are always others to mother.

I am now an “older woman.” Looking back on the past couple of years, I can see that I have eased into that role. A young mother thinks she is going into labor at 11:00 at night so I drive to her home and snooze on the couch while her other child is sleeping. At 3:00 a.m. her husband sends me a text message to say they’re on their way back; false alarm!

A young mother asks me advice about homeschooling; I send her some information. I check my e-mail and a young woman is contacting me to ask me what I think of a particular book; is it biblical? What are some good books about child rearing? These are little things that fall under the category of being a Titus 2 woman.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind and submissive to t heir own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
(Titus 2:3-5).

As I look ahead to my “empty” house in September, I can see that I have been given a great opportunity now to help young women who are in the place I have just left behind. The things that we, as older woman, are to teach the younger women are the things which we must have learned ourselves.

There are times when the trials and tribulations of domestic life seem utterly mundane. There are times when we feel the disapproval of the the world, which judges our usefulness based on our ability to earn a living. We are “just” stay-at-home mothers (as if it were an indictment).

The time when we mother our young ones, teach them godly truths, keep our homes and love our husbands is a training ground so that we may be an older woman to others someday. As we live our lives out as wife and mother, we are gaining precious life experience and wisdom to pass on to someone. Young mother, when you are tempted to feel like your life is so very monotonous, remember that you are going to be an older woman!

Kim Shay has been a child of God for the past 27 years, a wife for 25 years, and a mother for 22 years. She has three children, 22, 20, and 17 and homeschooled them until high school. They live in southern Ontario where Kim works actively in her local church teaching the Bible to women. She loves to read, to write, take her Beagle for walks and spend quiet evenings with her husband. Kim has been blogging since 2005 and can be found at The Upward Call.

The Organized Woman

It looks good, doesn’t it, that title up there for all the world to see; The Organized Woman?

One of the questions I am asked by women who have less children than I do and are feeling overwhelmed is, “How do you do it all?” The answer, of course, is that I don’t do it “all” (see my Not-To-Do List).

We all have different families, schedules, health challenges, energy levels, income and living spaces. Who am I to tell you how to organize your life? I can, however, share with you some things that have worked for me.

I’ve tried different planners and home schooling binders. I usually buy one in the heat of summer just because it motivates me as I begin another year of homeschooling…I flip through the pages and feel important and official and special ;-) (I’ve been homeschooling for 22 years-I need all the motivation I can get!).

I’ve finally realized that planners and binders are too bulky for me to carry around which is why they eventually end up all by their lonely selves on a shelf. So how do I remember what I am supposed to be doing with myself?

I like those small pocket-sized calenders that I can keep in my purse where I am less likely to loose them and I like lists! They are the personal secretary I wish I had to remind myself of the details of life.

When I go out the door to speak at an event I usually leave in the wee hours of the morning. I need a list! One for what I need to do for the family who is remaining at home and one that tells me what I need to take with me (I give away books, I display resource materials, I hand out business cards, I show off a picture of my beautiful family.I have so much fun!).

“ListPlanIt” is a mom owned business that has grown from 200 lists and planning pages when it first launched in May 2007 to more than 500. Its membership is more than 3,000 listmakers strong. It is a place where those who simply love lists and those in need of a little assistance in mental organization can both find what they need”.

Jennifer Tankersley of ListPlanIt has put together so many different lists for you and I so that we don’t have to. I think of ListPlanIt as my own personal assistant. My brain doesn’t work in a methodical careful way but, apparently Jennifer’s does because, wow, she has compiled some wonderful resources for the busy woman.

I like the fact that I can print what I need when I need it. I like the fact that ListPlanIt is open to new ideas for more lists and at 20.00 a year (!!)for the downloadable option…it is a bargain for anyone who wants to be more organized.

*I am an affiliate with ListPlanIt so I do get a small percentage of each sale that is generated through this blog. All proceeds generated through this blog help me continue to encourage and teach those who hold the next generation on their laps.

“Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, unquenchable.”- Henry Ward Beecher

A Woman’s Touch

Proverbs 14:1 speaks true to women even today: “The wise woman builds her house…” This Scripture does not suggest that we physically build the structure of our homes; but it does imply that we are to be a source of strength and an example of diligence for our families. If we are wise, we will care for our household and pay attention to its details so that it will not only remain intact, but stand firm.
Opportunities are all around us: noticing when someone needs to be held without a word, filling the kitchen with the fragrance of a favorite meal, decorating the rooms in a comfortable and inviting way, cleaning out the refrigerator and loading it with delicious food, dropping a love note in a lunch bag, turning off the television to listen to a heartache, lighting a candle to quiet minds after a hectic day.”

Slaying Dragons; What Christian Women Can Learn From the Business World

15 Sunday Jan 2012

I am a Christian mom and I read leadership blogs, not because I am hankering to trade my home for a conference room but because much of what they say applies to me.

After all, I am the manager of my home; I oversee the functioning of a busy household and I teach and train the future generation. I find that much of what business leaders say is motivational as well as applicable to me; mom of many-wife of one-follower of Jesus.

I keep quoting Michael Hyatt on my blog because he writes wisdom. Consider this; How Differences With Your Spouse Can Make Your Marriage Stronger. Michael may have been CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers but he has, apparently, been thinking about the whole marriage thing for a long time. I can learn from him.

Another post by Mr. Hyatt addresses the battle that some of us face every morning as we get out of bed. Read this creative look at starting our day Slay Your Dragons before Breakfast.

Really, that’s why I read these kind of posts. I have lots of dragons to slay. Some days I feel like I am in a jousting match against the world and my mind and emotions can take a downward spiral unless I read good, solid, practical advice on how to focus my mind so I can do what is right even in the confines of my home where no one will fire me:-).

I have met many women who tell me that “someday” they plan to read more…when they have the time. Actually, they have the time now but they are choosing to use it for other things. I know that some of us are “Marys” (ie. contemplative) and others are “Marthas” (ie, “do-ers”) but all of us have thoughts we are continually thinking throughout the day. And those thoughts influence our actions. Why not renew your mind, first with God’s word and then with the wisdom of fellow Christians who have proven themselves to be people who get things done? Why not read?

My Heart’s at Home; Practical Help for The Woman Who Wants to be a Stay-at-Home Mom

09 Monday Jan 2012

Posted by nt12many in becoming a stay at home mom, Cleaning, goals, Health, Homemaking, Inspirational Mama, Marraige, Practical Help, Reading Aloud, Thoughts and Prayers

Today I begin a series of posts aimed at the woman who longs to stay home with her children.
(There I go, again, with a picture of a mother reading to her child. I slip those in every opportunity I have!)

I am giving a nod to Laura at The Thinking Housewife because this series was inspired by what I read there.

I want to call your attention to a woman who wrote into The Thinking Housewife who desperately wants to stay home with her child but can’t afford to. Please read the beginning of the post One Woman’s Anti-Feminist Awakening
and then scroll waaay down and find Sarah Nelson’s response to the woman(as you scroll down you will see my response as well).

Sarah shared her own journey back home and the kind of hard choices she and her husband made in order for her to be at home with their child. Sarahs deliberate and careful hard work at home is one reason why I hate the term “stay-at-home-mom.” Wives and mothers who are successfully hewing, building and hammering a loving and faithful marriage and family are not just staying at home! They are planning, working, saving, feeding, loving, praying, cleaning, beautifying; in short, working very hard at home!

So, pour yourself a big glass of water (it’s winter when you need more water, girlfriend!) and read about Sarah and how she was able to stay at home with her child in spite of school loans that needed to be paid.

I contacted Sarah and interviewed her because I wanted to learn more about what she went through in order to make the adjustment to working at home with her child. I”ll be posting that interesting interview in two days.

Are you a mom whose heart longs to be home or do you know someone who feels that way? Ask them to join us as we encourage those whose hearts are at home.

As always, I love to hear from you!
