I have a confession to make. I’ve always found the subject of prayer…um…boring. For me, the word prayer was a bit like the word budget; it sounded restrictive and dull.

I’d read the missionary stories (God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew and The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom are two that come to mind) and those people made prayer seem vital, real and exciting.

But for me? Not so much.

Yet over the years I’ve prayed a lot and seen God work. I would pray when I was in great pain, pray for others who were experiencing sorrow and sickness and pray for my children when that middle-of-the-night-anxious-worry hit me.

In other words, I was good at crisis praying.

Almost two years ago I began praying weekly with an acquaintance who was going through struggles similar to ones I had experienced. I prayed to encourage her. I marked a date on the calendar and drove to her house just to keep her going. I didn’t want her to quit.

Together, we prayed.

Honestly, in the beginning, our commitment to a regular time of prayer wavered. We shared prayer requests talked too much before we got around to a short time of prayer.

It was a struggle but we kept meeting.

We had been praying together for a year when I moved to a new city with my family and our prayer time had to become a once-a-week phone call at an awkward time of day.

Strange to say, Thursday afternoons at 3 p.m. became the only time that mutually worked for us.

One hour…once a week.

Life is busy when you are middle-aged and the parents of adults, teens, in-betweens and an almost eight-year-old but, believe it or not, one year after my move, we are still praying.

Each week I feel like I’ve gotten a deep, wonderful gulp of life-giving oxygen as I lay my burdens down.

Life is so busy that we don’t want to use up our time together with small talk so we email our requests to each other beforehand. We fight hard to keep our commitment to pray together and it… is… hard.

Life goes on, you know?

images.jpg praying wife

Each week we both give all glory to God that we have remained faithful to this one hour of prayer.

It is our life-blood, our oxygen, our giving back to God our worries, fears and problems.

We’ve seen answers and we praise Him for that but, mostly, we’ve found peace and rest in realizing that prayer is not complicated. It is (like a simple budget) not just for the “experts”.

We simply join our voices and our hearts in giving glory to our Great God. We lay our burdens down and we lift up the weak hands of others as we pray.

A faithful prayer partner is a gift from God. You might find one (like I did) through a shared trial. Ask God to bring you a sister in Christ with whom you can come to God in prayer.

“Come let us know, let us press on to know the Lord, for His coming is like the rains, like the spring rains watering the earth.” Hosea 6:9

How do you get enough oxygen for your soul?

9781567691115.jpg christian loverThe Christian Lover: The Sweetness of Love and Marriage in the Letters of Believers by Dr. Michael A. G. Haykin shares with his readers letters of love between men and women who deeply loved each other and were also committed Christians. This book sweeps away the contemporary view that only modern people experience romance in marriage.

Letters written by Martin and Katharina Luther, John and Idalette Calvin, John and Lucy Hutchinson, Philip and Mercy Dodderidge, Adoniram and Ann Judson as well as others, prove that Christians have long known the joy of romantic married love. Each chapter highlights a married couple and gives the reader some insight into why and when the letters were written and the background information to each couple.

As I read these letters expressing need, longing, gratefulness, and thankfulness to God for a spouse, I was strengthened in my faith and realized, again, that God is the author of marriage and that His plan for marriage far surpasses what most people expect or accept.

In contrast to a romance novel that often leads readers into comparing their marriages to fictional ones, these are letters written by real people who struggled with the same temptations and discouragements as today. The reader is left with a wonderfully human picture of the lives of the authors.

The believers in this book were separated by distance, war and disease. They spoke of important life decisions as well as practical, everyday things and I was reminded that, despite the trials of life, the covenant of marriage can serve as a wonderful conduit of blessing.

I highly recommend it The Christian Lover.

I received a copy of this book for review purposes from Reformation Trust Publishing.
Dr. Haykin is a professor of church history and biblical spirituality at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lord,

images prayer
Give our husbands peace and joy so that it permeates their spirits and testifies to the world of You.
May they be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that they
may walk in a manner worthy of You, to please You in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work
and increasing in the knowledge of You; strengthened with all power according to Your glorious
might for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience: joyously giving thanks to You, who have
qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. (Col. 1:9-12)

We thank You and praise You and have confidence that since You have begun a good work in our
husbands, You will complete it. (Phil. 1:6)

Give us the faith to continue to stand on Your Word, trust in Your powerful name and continue in prayer.

We ask these things according to Your will!

Amen

Lord,

We pray for our husbands today. We pray for their vision, their goals, their hopes and their dreams

at_work_01 clock Picture credit

We pray that they would be known as men who have great hope in a holy God. We pray that they would set their minds on Your word and that they would live according to Your truth.

Give them a vision for what You have created them to accomplish in this life. Thank you, God, that You have a specific purpose for each man in this world. You have created our husbands with unique gifts and talents and You have a plan for their lives. We pray that You would guide them into their specific niche so that they would find great satisfaction in knowing that there is a reason why they were put on this earth.

We pray that they would be men of deep peace and great joy as they live and work in the calling and vocation that You have put them in.

In Your son’s name,

Amen

Lord,
We pray for our husbands. Show us ways that we can deepen our love for our husbands every single day of our lives together.

We pray for our husbands hearts and minds. May they renew their minds in Your word so that the burdens of this world do not overwhelm them. We pray that they would focus their hearts on You so that they would be peaceful men even when life is hard. Give them a deep sense of Your presence all the days of their lives.images beach

Lord, You have given us the covenant of marriage. Enrich our marriages, flood them with Your love and romance! Thank you for the Song of Solomon that teaches us Your view of marriage. Help us to romantically love our husbands all the days of our lives together.

We pray in the name of Your son, Jesus,

Amen

Why I love My Husband

ABC's of Love, blessing your husband, bragging about your husband, covenant marriage, happy wives club, pleasing your husband, trusting God

Why I Love My Husband

I’ve joined the linky party over at The Happy Wives Club because it’s an awesome site that reminds us there are many wives in the world who really do love being married.

Almost 32 years ago, two gawky, skinny, immature people got married and began to grow together. I was 21 and Doug was 25. Here are just a few of the reasons why I love my husband…it’s a never-ending list!

1. He makes me laugh. He has a really funny soft-shoe tap dance that he fakes and it is really good!
2. He loves children. He adores his own children even when they drive him crazy.
3. He has awesome blue eyes with a dark ring around them. They were one of the first things I noticed about him and now 5 of our 8 children have those eyes (mine are brown).
4.He is the most amazing Chef. He can make our tiny kitchen sizzle and pop with delicious smells and tastes.
5.He is a technical genius. He thinks so far outside the box that I’ve been told by many very smart engineers that my husband is a genius. I already knew that but its good to have smart people recognize it as well.
6. He always seems stunned by what I write. Really.
7. He gets absorbed and fascinated by things…like a little boy. The kids love it.
9. He is generous. Very generous.
9. He is very kind and patient with his 86 year old father who calls 8 times a day to talk about nothing.
10. He makes me laugh…really hard…did I mention that already?

Join the party at The Happy Wives Club and brag about your husband!

Or, why not start celebrating Valentine’s Day a little early and leave a list of some of the reasons why you love your husband? Then send him a link and let him know you’ve bragged about him here? I double-dare you!

Lord,

We pray for our influence on the lives of our husbands. We want to be Proverbs 31 wives who “do him good and not evil all the days of our lives.”

We pray we would influence our husbands with godly wisdom. Show us when to keep our mouths shut and prompt us to speak up when we need to.

Give us an all-encompassing love and understanding for our men so that we can see beyond their behavior and understand the reason for their decisions.

Give us the strength to unconditionally accept them.

Give us joy and peace as we live with them.

When we need to stand strong on something that You have deeply convicted us about, help us to do that even if our husbands don’t understand.

Help us to develop a strong sense of humor and fun to lighten up the heavy responsibilities of life.

Make us joyful, happy wives who can laugh even when life seems dark.

We want to hew out strong, delightful marriages so that the next generation of children will see the blessing and honor of the institution of marriage because You created it.

We pray all this in Your name,

Amen

blessing your husband, emotions and men, God keeps His promises, joyful husbands, trusting God

il_570xN.48852746

Lord,

We pray for our husbands today. We pray for his emotional health. We pray you would protect his heart and his mind as he experiences the sorrows, joys, frustrations and trials of life. Help him to give these things to You so that he can keep a balanced perspective. Give him a steady, persevering way of looking at life and strengthen his mind so that he can tackle hard things.

Thank you that Your word says that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We pray for that kind of peace for our husbands.

Let them be known in their jobs, families, communities and churches for being strong, wise men with tender hearts. Help them to understand how to express their emotions. Lord, masculinity is under such attack and we pray that they would be masculine men who know who they are and who You created them to be.

Most of all, we pray that You would give them deep, abiding peace and joy every single day of their lives.

You are such a great God and we worship you.

In Christ’s name,

Amen

ABC's of Love, blessed communication, blessing your husband, growing in understanding, trusting God

Lord,

We pray for our communication with our husbands.  Help us to understand what they are really trying to tell us even when they aren’t saying the words. Give us discernment and wisdom to really hear what they are saying.images holding hands

Make us wise women who have understanding and insight into our husbands! When we don’t understand why he is doing what he is doing, prompt us to bring our confusion to you. Thank you that Your Holy Spirit knows that we do not even know how to pray as we ought but He intercedes for us with groaning to deep for words! It is such a blessing to know that the Holy Spirit works on our behalf, Lord!

Give us marriages where we can intimately know each other. Give us marriages where we are able to understand and enjoy each other even when we are very different.justtwoofus

Thank You that marriage is Your idea!

In Christ’s name we pray,

Amen
