celebrate marriage, my husband rocks, Union 28

Marriage between one man and one woman is under serious attack in the United States and in many parts of the world. One of my goals is to celebrate marriage here on Generational Womanhood so you can imagine how delighted I was to learn about Union 28 and their marriage honoring clothing!
The mission of Union 28 is encourage marriage relationships, communicate a positive image of marriage and honor the sanctity of the marriage covenant…now, that’s a mission I can get behind!

My husband rocks…

Union 28 sent me hot pink t-shirt made of 100% Ringspun Cotton. I am not really sure what Ringspun cotton is but I love the weight and feel of this shirt. It has quickly become a favorite.

The folks at Union 28 have great customer service and the selection of marriage-honoring shirts, clothes and other products is delightful.

Wouldn’t it be fun to outfit your children in “My Daddy Rocks” shirts and surprise him on Fathers Day?

My husband rocks...

I used to try to come up with creative ways to tell my husband that a new baby was on it’s way…wouldn’t it be fun to wrap up a tiny little onesie from Union 28 to spring the news?

And what’s wrong with a mom letting the clan know that she wouldn’t mind being bragged on as well?

Or, if you’re planning a family reunion or trip this summer, why not tell everyone how proud you are of your husband by outfitting the entire family in Union 28 clothing? I only wish I still had a slew of young children to model these shirts. Too cute!

My husband rocks… because he still tells me I’m beautiful after thirty years of marriage.

It isn’t hard to be entered to win this giveaway…just brag about how your husband “rocks” in the comment section. A winner will be picked by my family on May 14th.

Oh Lord, Hear My Cry; A Review, Interview and Giveaway!

26 Monday Mar 2012

Posted by nt12many in author interviews, Book Review, Books, Give Away, Holy Bible, Inspirational Mama, Thoughts and Prayers, Writing

Oh Lord, Hear My Cry by is a devotional e-book on the Psalms. The author, Zari Banks, introduces the book to her readers by sharing some of the deep trials she experienced. After struggling to trust God in those trials she turned to the Psalms in her sorrow.
This e-book uses a very simple approach to the Psalms; daily scriptures and a prayer for thirty days. There are no illustrations or graphics in this book but there are encouraging words and Psalms from scripture. Although this book does need more visual appeal and should be professionally formatted, any reader would be blessed to read through this simple devotional every day of the month.

To be entered to win this e-devotional, please leave a comment sharing your favorite Psalm or scripture verse in the comment section. I will pick a winner on March 31st!

I had the privilege of interviewing author Zari Banks. Join me as I “pick her brain” about writing!

Welcome to Generational Womanhood Zari! Thank you for taking the time and allowing us to get to know you!

1. Please share with us a little bit about yourself and what a typical day looks like in your life.

I’m a mom, a teacher, an eater, a writer, an editor, business owner. I’m a life-long learner. I love to read and spend time with my family and friends and I love the Lord. A typical day for me is busy. I operate my family’s insurance office, blog and edit books, do the marketing and accounting for this office and our bakery as well as get in some fun.

2. Have you always wanted to write? What is your motivation for writing?

I have always wanted to be a writer. Matter of fact, when I was seven, I declared my future would be thus: Undergrad, then law school, practice law and make tons of money, retire and become a teacher and then retire from that and become a writer. My motivation for writing is the same as that of breathing – It’s necessary for life.

3. Tell us why you chose to write this book? Aren’t there enough books out there on Proverbs and Psalms? What is unique about your book?

I didn’t choose to write these books per se. I never imagined myself writing non-fiction work, and that’s all I write as a published writer. The prayers prayed were my simply my prayers recorded in my journal at the time when I was in a pit of despair and was acting in obedience to the Lord to get into the Bible to find my rescue.
My books are unique in that they weren’t written to be published for anyone. The prayers would’ve been prayed and recorded regardless because I pray and write my prayers in my journal all the time, I have for years. I shared these prayers in a group with others who were also struggling with various things. I was told the prayers were encouraging and uplifting. They were asking me to pray them repeatedly and continue sharing prayers with them, so, in giving thanks to the Lord in prayer for using me to encourage others (even while I was hurting) the Lord said to me, “I can use those to help more.”

So, I consulted with my mentor and published them. Even now, I get emails from folks telling me those prayers are blessing them. God proved faithful. He’s using those prayers to help more people.

4. For the typical Christian woman who feels overburdened by her responsibilities and feels as if she is “failing” the Lord Jesus, what words of encouragement can you offer her?

There is no such thing as failing the Lord Jesus as long as you believe in Him. If you believe in Him – if you have faith – you’re pleasing Him. With your faith in God, the One True God, you cannot go wrong. Any time we act in faith He’ll show up and do exceedingly abundantly above what you think is possible. I would also go a little further and say that it’s a lie and typical strategy of the enemy to make you think you’re failing God. We’re not worth a whole lot separate from Christ, anyway, so when we have the Holy Spirit in us we can view hiccups as they really are, confess if necessary, receive forgiveness and move forward in victory.

5. Any practical tips for other women who feel called to write? What about for those who are seeking to be published?

Anyone who feels called to write should write. God knows how important reading and writing are … He left us an 800,000-word text. Write. For those seeking publication, there are several avenues to make that happen. Commit your way to the Lord and He’ll make the work of your hands successful.

6.Thank you so much for visiting with us today. May the Lord bless you and strengthen you as you share His word with His people.

Thank YOU! This is truly and honor for me, and I receive that blessing in Jesus’ Name. Thank you.

Wordy Wednesday; A Book Review and Give Away

21 Wednesday Mar 2012

Posted by nt12many in Book Review, Books, Give Away, Thomas Nelson, Writing

Called to Controversy The Unlikely Story of Moishe Rosen and The Founding of Jews for Jesus by Ruth Rosen is a weighty biography written by daughter about her father. When I first received it in the mail from Thomas Nelson, my heart sank. It is 307 pages long and, since it was written by someone related to the author, I feared it would be mired in minutia and endless, boring details. I was wrong.

Ruth Rosen writes with clarity and honesty about a very outspoken man and the ministry he founded called Jews for Jesus.

Born in 1932, the story of Rosens’s childhood is worth reading for its insights into wartime America and the first impressions of God on a boy growing up in a Jewish community. I enjoyed the direct recollections of Moishe throughout the book.

Moishe Rosen came to Christ as an adult through the influence of his wife who had also been raised Jewish. His struggles to assimilate into the American Christian churches of the time are both comical and enlightening. His first impressions of a Christian church service are invaluable for anyone who wants to share Christ with others.

Ruth Rosen writes sensitively about her father who was outspoken, flamboyant, opinionated and deeply committed to serving Jesus Christ. Moishe’s own words often leap off the page to inspire and interest the reader.

Moishe said this, “I never liked being boss. I never sat down with someone to plan out what they should be doing. And, if they didn’t know exactly how to do it, I’d trouble-shoot it.”

He was the kind of man who was probably a little like a bull in a china shop; he got things done, he didn’t apologize and he kept on going in spite of the crash of broken china around him. His daughter does a good job of sharing his story without glossing over his weaknesses, yet, her love for him shines through.

As someone who became a believer in 1978, Rosen’s approach to serving Christ was, in some ways, typical of that era (including the founder of Calvary Chapel, Chuck Smith). Those were the days of bold, young “Jesus Freaks” who obeyed first and thought about “how” later.

His daughter Ruth said,

“My father would be the first to tell you that what you think of him makes little, if any, difference. It’s what you think of Jesus that really matters.

So while this book is not meant to force beliefs on anyone, please excuse this one burst of gospel fervor: if you don’t know Jesus and will consider him with an open mind and heart, I believe God will bless you beyond anything you have ever dreamed possible….We can spend our brief lives any way we choose, but we can spend them only once.

It’s important to recognize value, in ourselves, in others, and in whatever work God calls us to do. That’s something I learned from my father.”

If you enjoy lengthy insights into interesting people, I recommend this book. I received this book free of charge from Thomas Nelson Publishers for review.

To be entered to win a copy, please leave a comment and share what historical or contemporary person you find interesting! I will pick a winner on March 31st!

We love Because He First Loved Us…

27 Friday Jan 2012

“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

February is just around the corner and it gives us a delightful excuse to pull out the pink and red tablecloth, cut out some paper hearts and brighten up our little corner of the world.

My memories of Valentines Day are sweet ones. I remember happy parties at my elementary school (back in the dark ages of the 1960′s) and the fun of making little shoebox mailboxes for classmates to anonymously slip their homemade Valentines into. Perhaps those happy memories are the reason why our family has always done something a little special on Valentines Day.

It varies from year to year but usually includes a family tea party. Now that I have almost all grown up girls, they put on elaborate parties and often invite every single young girl from church! More than I could have done at their age, that’s for sure.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

So, as we approach February we anticipate some fun around Generational Womanhood. Be on the look out for simple party ideas, a few craft how-tos and at least one book give-away (along with an interview of the author). I think you will love it!

Also, we will be starting Marvelous Marriage Mondays where I will be posting a prayer for our husbands taken from The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian as well as excerpts from other wise writers on the subject of marriage. We know we are truly loving our husbands when we set aside time to pray for them regularly. Please join me for Marvelous Marriage Mondays!

I don’t know about you-all but, as I write this, a blizzard is swirling outside! I am craving a little color and Valentines Day is just the excuse I need to celebrate!

The winner of the book Why Men Hate Going to Church is Shawn! Congratulations Shawn! Please contact me by January 3rd with your mailing address and I will get the book out to you! If I don’t hear from Shawn by then I will draw another winner!

We are having technical challenges uploading my message Following in the Footsteps of Mary; Encouragement for Mothers so keep an eye out for it in the next day or two!

May the Lord bless you with His joy this Christmas!

The Nativity -G.K.Chesterton

The thatch on the roof was as golden,
Though dusty the straw was and old,
The wind had a peal as of trumpets,
Though blowing and barren and cold,
The mother’s hair was a glory
Though loosened and torn,
For under the eaves in the gloaming
A child was born.

Have a myriad children been quickened,
Have a myriad children grown old,
Grown gross and unloved and embittered,
Grown cunning and savage and cold?
God abides in a terrible patience,
Unangered, unworn,
And again for the child that was squandered
A child is born.

What know we of aeons behind us,
Dim dynasties lost long ago,
Huge empires, like dreams unremembered,
Huge cities for ages laid low?
This at least—that with blight and with blessing,
With flower and with thorn,
Love was there, and his cry was among them,
“A child is born.”

Though the darkness be noisy with systems,
Dark fancies that fret and disprove,
Still the plumes stir around us, above us
The wings of the shadow of love:
Oh! Princes and priests, have ye seen it
Grow pale through your scorn;
Huge dawns sleep before us, deep changes,
A child is born.

And the rafters of toil still are gilded
With the dawn of the stars of the heart,
And the wise men draw near in the twilight,
Who are weary of learning and art,
And the face of the tyrant is darkened,
His spirit is torn,
For a new king is enthroned; yea, the sternest,
A child is born.

And the mother still joys for the whispered
First stir of unspeakable things,
Still feels that high moment unfurling
Red glory of Gabriel’s wings.
Still the babe of an hour is a master
Whom angels adorn,
Emmanuel, prophet, anointed,
A child is born.

And thou, that art still in thy cradle,
The sun being crown for thy brow,
Make answer, our flesh, make an answer,
Say, whence art thou come—who art thou?
Art thou come back on earth for our teaching
To train or to warn—?
Hush—how may we know?—knowing only
A child is born.

Don’t Hug a Grudge by Donna Perugini; A Giveaway

22 Thursday Dec 2011

Posted by nt12many in Book Review, Books, Give Away, Guest Post, Holiday, Holy Bible, Home Education, Inspirational Mama, Reading Aloud, Sharing Jesus, Thoughts and Prayers

What better way to end this year and start the new one than to teach our children about forgiveness?

I am thrilled to introduce my friend Donna Perugini today. I met Donna through the Northwest Christian Writers Association and am privileged to know her. Donna is an children’s author and has such a fun website for those who teach and mother children.

I love her book Don’t Hug a Grudge and Donna is generously giving away a copy to my readers. To be entered to win, leave a comment on this post telling us what you love best about the child/children in your life. Drawing is on January 8th!

Donna, welcome to Generational Womanhood. Thanks for stopping by!

I’m so glad to be here, Jill.

When did you begin writing? Have you always wanted to be a writer? What motivates you?

I began writing stories in high school. Even then I began with a childrens book. It never occurred to me that I could be an author. The desire was really planted as I stood speaking with a group of women at a company home party. One of them posed the question, “What do you want to do next in your life?” The first thing that came to my thoughts was, “I want to write a children’s book. Not too long after that, that’s exactly what I did!

What motivates me is teaching children. I was the childrens church leader for 30 years in various churches (we moved every few years due to my husband’s job). I’d put together a program with puppet skits, object lessons and needed stories to get the point across to the children. The stories that are now in books were first tested on our childrens church.

Why do you write for children? What do you want to communicate to children through your books?

I write for children because that’s what I do the best! I’m a teacher that wants to ‘cut the Word of God into bite-sized pieces’ for those precious little hearts. A woman was in touch with me about The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar. She relates that the book was so much a part of her life that she held on to her dream like Orville did. This girl was 16 when she entered a tragic time in her life. “I TOLD MY MOM ABOUT THE TIMES I WOULD THINK ABOUT ORVILLE AND HOW THE STORY REMINDED ME TO KEEP DREAMING (GOD’S DREAM!) DURING THE DIFFICULT TIMES – YOU KNOW, THE DREAM GOD HAS PUT IN EACH ONE OF US TO BE WHAT HE HAS PLANNED FOR US TO BE.” She told me she is now living God’s dream for her life.

In my books I want to teach children about close friendships (especially with Jesus), the dream that God has put in their heart, prayer, overcoming fear, angels and forgiving.

Who would benefit from these books? Are they sermons? For Sunday school? What creative ways can they be used (besides reading them to a child).

Every child that is read or reads the books would benefit. They have been turned into sermons. Joyce Meyer of Joyce Meyer Ministries International used the book, Don’t Hug a Grudge entirely in her teaching on “Bitterness, Resentment and Unforgiveness”. It’s tape # 2, “Are you holding a grudge or is the grudge holding you?” in the tape series. I received letters, emails and phone calls from all over the world asking about the book described and used in Joyce’s teaching.

I’ve been putting up curriculum that goes with the books on my blog(www.DonnaPeruginiChildrensAuthor.com) so Sunday School and Children’s Church teachers can use the books as lessons. The curriculum has an explanation of each part of the book, The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar, along with coloring pages, a craft and a crossword puzzle. It’s also set up to use for Easter time lessons with a place to order cocoons that will open for a real life butterfly experience, just like Orville.

Each of the first three Orville series books has songs written for them as guitar chords and put into video format with the illustrations from the books. The songs would be wonderful as the children sing for adults on Easter morning!

For the aspiring writers among us, tell us how you write. Do you keep a daily schedule?
I haven’t put a lot of time into writing children’s books, but keeping up the blog keeps the ‘juices’ flowing. If you are an aspiring writer, you need to have an ‘author’s platform’ in place before sending out your manuscripts. The publishers expect authors to be out selling books through blogging, social networking, speaking engagements…any and all creative ways to sell books.

Do you have any words of wisdom to share with those who want to write and be published?

Join a writer’s group like Northwest Christian Writers or Society of Children‘s Book Writers. Your group choice would depend on your genre. Get into a critique group. Publishers expect you to be professional and understand the ‘making of a book’ to the ‘distribution’ of a book. They believe you will become professional if you are a part of the professionals…”birds of a feather flock together”. Look for Chip MacGregors blog, one of many out there. He’s putting out very professional explanations for manuscripts, querying, etc.

Tell us about the book you are sharing with us Don’t Hug a Grudge (love the title by the way!). My six year old really liked this book but you recommend it for 8 and up. Why did you write it?

I recommended it for 8, but parents can decide if it fits their child’s age. Your 6 year old is very perceptive!
Looking around at my own children and the children at church led me to notice a lot of grudging going on. As parents we think that it’s just a phase our child is going through…a sandbox-fight type of grudge. Leave them alone and they’ll get over it. We are to be teaching our children what the Word says in their terms.

As adults we use a lot of terms like, ‘hold a grudge, nurse a grudge, feed a grudge’. I took the stages of unforgiveness and show how a grudge is so innocent looking, you pick it up and hold it in the beginning, but given time it grows into resentment (where you don’t hold it….it holds you). Then it grows into bitterness (whose root goes deep). Bitterness causes you to hate the ones you love.

In the same book you’ll find both English and Spanish. A Spanish speaking blog is using the Book Trailer, Don’t Hug a Grudge as an engaging way to teach adults and children Spanish. The Book Trailer has the words spoken in English first and then Spanish. The Book Trailer is downloadable.

A prison chaplain requested some Don’t Hug a Grudge books for their jail in Illinois. It’s also been used by recovery groups, bible studies, Operation Shoebox, and missionaries in foreign countries. Children who read the book are taught how to recognize a grudge when it’s small and send it on its way with the Word of God.

I know your blog has a number of great resources for those who have children in their lives. What are they?

My blog is full of useful resources that are free for the downloading. Look under the top tabs on the blog. You’ll find Songs, Guitar Chords, Coloring Pages, Crossword Puzzles, Curriculum with Craft, and Music Videos.

Be sure to sign up by email on the right side of the blog. You’ll be updated when new curriculum is added. If you sign up on Google’s Friend Follow, keep in mind that it will be discontinued in March 2012 for those who are not using Blogger. By signing up by email it will always be in your email box, along with other announcements for newly added items. I blog about child related helpful info for parents and grandparents.

Thank you so much, Donna, for stopping by my little corner of the web today. May the Lord bless you as you minister to the next generation through your writing!

I know that my book, Don’t Hug a Grudge, will find a good home and be useful to some parents somewhere. If people don’t win and are looking to purchase the book, they can find it on my author website www.DonnaPerugini.com or through my blog by clicking on the Amazon changing book covers on the right side of my blog. They’re $4.99 each plus shipping and the other three books are $7.99 each plus shipping.

To be entered to win a copy of Donnas book Don’t Hug a Grudge, leave a message sharing what you love about the children in your life. The drawing will be on January 8th so the child in your life can enjoy a new book in the New Year!

During these last few days before Christmas I have three gifts for you :-) and because it is December 21st I also have reason to celebrate because today is the shortest, darkest day of the year! That means (for those of us in the far North)things are looking up.Yes, this is the “turn” of the year. Tomorrow (December 22nd)I will be publishing my interview with a lovely children’s author who is giving away a wonderful book(the drawing will be on January 8th).

The next day (December 23rd) I will be sharing a free recording of a message I gave to a beautiful group from MomsNext about the life of little Mary, the mother of Jesus. Finally, don’t forget that I am giving away a copy of Why Men Hate Going to Church on Christmas Eve (December 24th…as if you didn’t know:) so leave a comment on that post. Why Men Hate Going to Church (A Book Review and Giveaway!)

04 Sunday Dec 2011

Posted by nt12many in Book Review, Books, Give Away, Marraige, Thomas Nelson

Over twenty years ago my husband and I and our three small children were members of a Mennonite Church led by Pastor Ed Miller. In our small church of less than 100 members, Pastor Miller made sure that each family had a mail “slot” where we received church “news” on a regular basis and he insisted that the name on those church mailboxes be the name of the head of the family (ie., the John Campbell family) even if John Campbell never darkened the door of the church.
Sunday after Sunday Mrs. Campbell and her children might be the only family members in church but that name on the mailbox in the lobby reminded us all that the Campbell family had a head and that he was missing.

I don’t have statistical evidence but I am pretty sure that that little church had a higher than average conversion rate for men simply because the congregation was continually reminded to honor them, pray for them and immediately recognize them when they came in the door, “Oh, yes, John Campbell, so good to meet you! I’ve seen your name on your mailbox.”

Why Men Hate Going To Church by David Murrow addresses the problem of the missing men in the Christian church and affirms that Pastor Miller was on the right track with those mailboxes.

Based on extensive research as well as a working knowledge of church history, Mr. Murrow tackles such topics as who are the missing men, twelve things men fear about going to church (this chapter is worth the price of the book), how churches drive boys away from the church, why mega churches are mega and how to minister to men.

After wading through the research about the missing men in the church (and why it matters) I read eagerly, hoping Mr. Murrow would give some solid answers to this very real crisis in the Christian church. I was dismayed to discover that he spent a lot of time on what I consider to be peripheral details; start and end the services on time, don’t use “church speak”, don’t ask men to share their feelings, and other predictable ideas.

When Mr. Murrow finally got down to brass tacks I was heartened to find that he grasped the real problem. Here is one part of his excellent chapter entitled, Getting the Big Picture Right. He writes, “…if we are going to transform men from passive pew-sitters into battle-ready warriors, we must get the big story right. The gospel is the story of a courageous man who is out to save the world against impossible odds…He is calling you to risk everything to come under His command…That’s the message men crave. It’s a message that’s lost in today’s therapeutic church.”

I found the book enlightening although I did find the lengthy introduction by the author (including the reasons for the additions and revisions) a bit much to wade through early on. I advise skipping the intro and coming back to it later.

My other concern about the book is that it is formatted in a way that makes it difficult to use as a reference book for those who need the information and want to refer back to it. If Why Men Hate Going to Church ever needs to be updated or expanded again I hope the author just turns it into a second book.

I was given a free copy of this book to review for Thomas Nelson.

To be entered to win a copy of this book please leave a comment and share what you think about this problem or if you think there is one? I will draw a winner on December 20th.
