Holy Week, Resurrection Egg Crafts, Teaching Children Biblical Truth

Yes, I’ll admit it. I am together putting these eggs at the last minute because Easter caught me by surprise. I just wasn’t paying attention to the calendar….but, isn’t the motto of every mother,”Better late than never?”

After talking to my seven year old several days ago, I realized that he really doesn’t know the Easter story so these eggs may remedy that a bit. I am shamelessly taking advantage of our eleven year old and using her natural “take charge” attitude to put these together. As she collects the items, copies the verses and stuffs the eggs, she’ll be reviewing the Easter story at the same time.

We’ll be doubling up on the eggs and doing two per day (instead of one per day) because I’m starting five days before Easter. Although my goal is to get through them all by Sunday, it’s not the end of the world if we are still hiding and finding Resurrection eggs a week or two from now. When I remember that my goal is to talk about Jesus and His victory on the cross, I feel less pressure to complete them in within a certain time frame. If these take a while, we’re just extending the blessing!

I’m also just using items around the house and substituting as necessary.

Young children just love these eggs! I have found Dollar stores to be the best place to get them.

First Egg (which I will skip since we just had Palm Sunday and reviewed what it was all about)
Message: Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people waved palm branches.
Passage: Matthew 21:1-11
Item:piece of palm branch or anything that resembles a small palm branch leaf

Second Egg:
Message: Mary poured expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet.
Passage: John 12:2-8
Item: small perfume sample, cloth with perfume, or a piece of cotton with cologne on it

Third Egg:
Message: Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples.
Passage: Matthew 26:17-19
Item: piece of Chex cereal; or take clay and make a small bread-like shape

Fourth Egg:
Message: Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
Passage: Matthew 27:3
Item: 3 dimes or plastic “silver” money

Fifth Egg:
Message: Jesus carried His own cross.
Passage: John 19:17
Item: small plastic cross or use toothpicks/popsicle sticks cut and glued in a cross form

Sixth Egg:
Message: Soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head.
Passage: John 19:2
Item: small thorny branch or a large thorn all by itself

Seventh Egg:
Message: Soldiers parted Jesus’ garments and cast lots for His coat.
Passage: John 19:23
Item: swatch of burlap and a nail (or miniature dice)
Item: 7 or 8 whole cloves, or other whole spices

Eighth Egg:
Message: Jesus was nailed to a cross and pierced in His side.
Passage: John 19:18,37 & John 20:25-29
Item: a nail

Nineth Egg:
Message: They gave Jesus vinegar mixed with gall on a sponge to drink.
Passage: Matthew 27:34
Item: a small sponge

Tenth Egg:
Message: Spices to prepare Jesus for burial.
Passage: John 19:40

Eleventh Egg:
Message: The stone covering Jesus’ tomb was rolled away.
Passage: John 20:1
Item: a small rock

Twelveth Egg:

Message: The napkin around Jesus’ head was lying separately from His linen cloths. He was not there. He has
risen!
Passage: John 20:6-7
Item: a scrap of linen-type fabric

25 Valentine’s Day Ideas for Couplesby Mary May Larmoyeux from Family Life Today
helpmeet_verseIs it more important to love … or to be loved?

Most of us would agree with George Eliot’s words, “I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved.”

Valentine’s Day is the occasion when you can experience both. We asked FamilyLife Facebook friends and Marriage Memo readers to share some of their favorite Valentine’s Day ideas.

With a little help from our friends, here are 25 creative ways to tell your spouse, “I love you.”

1. On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your spouse. Ask your spouse to pull several pieces of paper from the felt bag, and then give your sweetheart whatever kind of kiss is described.

2. Make a book about why you love your spouse and why you are thankful for him/her. The woman who sent this idea wrote, “He loved it! Said it was the best gift he has ever gotten. And it helped me to focus on the things I love about my husband and not his shortcomings.”

3. Take your sweetie on a scavenger hunt. Ask him/her to answer riddles to find the clues to items that you placed somewhere around town. The last item should give instructions that lead to your Valentine’s Day activities.

4. After enjoying a candlelight dinner for two at home, give your spouse a massage and watch a romantic movie. The woman who suggested this wrote, “Last Valentine’s Day when I got home from work, my husband … had our bedroom set up with a candlelit table for two. He is NOT a cook but he made an awesome meal … grilled steak, sautéed shrimp in lemon, garlic, and butter, a vegetable, and [he] bought a chocolate fountain that was flowing—surrounded by fresh fruit for dipping. After dinner he led me over to his homemade massage table. … We ended our special night with a romantic movie.

5. Surprise your spouse with a special getaway together. The man who suggested this made reservations at a bed and breakfast, arranged for childcare, asked for time off from work for himself and his wife, and packed his and her bags. When he asked his wife to go to lunch on Valentine’s Day she was in for a wonderful surprise. “The little bit of effort I put into that weekend paid off huge for weeks to come.”

6. Give your wife a dozen roses. On each stem attach a note for a future date—to do something that she would enjoy (example: Go to the symphony).

7. If possible, go on a date with your spouse to a restaurant that you enjoyed when you first met. After you order your meal, take some time to write down favorite memories from the past year. Then share your lists.

8. Have 11 roses delivered to your wife, and then give her a 12th yourself while reading her a love poem.

9. Fill a large box with helium balloons and special gifts for Valentine’s Day. The woman who suggested this said that her gifts included “new sleep shorts for him and a new nightgown for me, a box of chocolate-covered strawberries and red napkins … some new candles, and a romantic CD. He got the hint. And loved the weekend.”

10. Create an intimate Valentine’s Day evening at home, without the children. The woman who suggested this idea said that she and her husband “enjoyed planning the menu, shopping for the meal, and ultimately preparing the meal together. Cooking to soft, romantic music can really be a turn on! While dining, the same soft, romantic music is a wonderful mood-setter. Dinner was followed by just the two of us having the whole dance floor, our den, to ourselves. I won’t say what all this led to, but it was a truly romantic night that would not have happened at the local restaurant!”

11. Order food from a take-out restaurant and have a picnic for all the Valentines in your family on your living room floor. The person who suggested this said, “The kids look forward to this every year. When we tried to change it, they wouldn’t allow it … it has become a tradition. The kids see the value of family and a loving marriage.”

12. Privacy and weather permitting, watch a romantic movie on your deck or patio.

13. If you are separated across the miles, send a care package filled with things that are red.

14. Make a meal with symbols of love. Examples: Write I love you with string beans, make a tart in the shape of a heart …

15. Hide little heart candies in your spouse’s shoes, coat, car, etc. The woman who suggested this said that she’s been doing this for decades. “Now a couple of the grandkids help me with delight.”

16. Wives, show up at your husband’s office before lunch. Call him from the parking lot and tell him you are going to take him for a lunch rendezvous and that you will be waiting for him whenever he can take a break. Wear a nice outfit and tell him you have something sexy on underneath for when he gets home. Take him to a nice place for lunch and back to the office. Give him some great kisses telling him how glad you are to be married to him, and tell him you will be waiting for him when he gets home.

17. Fill a jar with Valentine candy and notes for your spouse. Examples of notes are: Good for a backrub, 10 kisses, etc. Notes could also express your love and respect: “I am so glad that God blessed my life with such a great husband like you.” Individually roll each note and tie it with a ribbon.

18. Surprise your spouse by taking a vacation day from work and enjoy Valentine’s Day at home. Have a relaxing morning together on the porch, deck, or patio. Then go to a favorite restaurant for lunch. The man who suggested this idea had also reserved a spa treatment and tanning session for his wife. “While she was doing that,” he says, “I went home and made her a special dinner.”

19. Write a poem for your spouse and frame it.

20. On individual note cards, write why you love your spouse. Insert these cards in a small photo album. The woman who suggested this idea began her album with a honeymoon picture and introductory note card, and ended it with a love note.

21. Surprise your husband when he comes home from work on February 14. Place a welcome sign on the kitchen table and leave a trail of red foil-wrapped Hershey kisses to your bedroom.

22. With roses in hand and permission from your wife’s boss, go to her workplace and read a love poem to her. The woman who shared this idea said, “I am a teacher in an inner city school. Last year my husband dressed in my favorite suit and tie, came to my school with roses in hand. He got permission and assistance from the office staff to open the speaker system into my classroom and proceeded to read a long and beautiful love poem to me. He then came to my classroom and presented me with the bouquet of roses which I received while wiping my tears of joy and love for this wonderful man whom I have been married to for just under 30 years.”

23. Make a special “14 Reasons I Love You” Valentine’s Day breakfast for your sweetheart. On his/her plate, leave a letter or card listing 14 reasons that you love your spouse.

24. If possible, send a card postmarked in a town that has a romantic name such as Loveland, Colorado; Valentine, Texas; or Romance, Arkansas.

25. After your spouse goes to bed, tape notes to his car’s steering wheel with reasons that you love him, or decorate the bathroom mirror with lipstick kisses or Valentine’s window clings.

Have fun on February 14, and remember: Love is not meant to be given and received on just Valentine’s Day. Instead, it’s to be practiced every single day of the entire year.

candy rings craft, cheap crafts, fun for children, inexpensive ideas for celebrations, raising children

picture from http://www.crafts.kaboose.com

Easy and cute. I think these would be darling with red candy or heart shaped candy. If you happen to have a little box that a ring came in from the jewelry store, you would thrill a little girl with one of these tucked inside!

What you need:

Chenille wire (also called pipe cleaners)
Candy wrapped in sparkly foil or crinkly paper
Glue (I use tacky glue)
Glitter and white glue

To make:
1. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the finger to measure the ring size. Cut the pipe cleaner and secure by twisting the ends under and over.
2.Glue the candy on top of the ring.
3. Lightly dot white glue onto the candy, sprinkle with glitter and dry.

Give the ring with some “sweet” words of love such as,

“You always razzle, dazzle my heart” or
“On the day you were born you wrapped me around your finger just like this ring”

Happy Valentine’s Day!

ABC's of Love, blessing your husband, covenant marriage, pleasing your husband

Christmas is a romantic time of year, coming in close to Valentines Day.images.jpg fireplace with couple Romance, however, takes time which can be in short supply this time of year! Getting alone with your spouse can also be a challenge as you find yourself more involved in social events like parties, caroling, hospitality and service projects. Here are a few ideas to keep a little romance in Christmas this year!

1). Hang mistletoe everywhere you possibly can! Get silly about it and hang it in the car, the bathroom and over the kitchen sink. Then, make a big deal out of kissing your husband at every opportunity! Grab those children while you are at it and lay one on them when you can catch them!

2). Take a drive together through neighborhoods to look at the lights and listen to music on the radio. This can be done with small children strapped into their car seats!

3. Hustle the kids into their room a bit early and keep them there with a story CD and then cuddle by the tree with your hubby in the dark. Breathe deep and relax!

4. Write little “anonymous” love notes to your husband with a little candy candy drawn next to them. Write on the mirror in lipstick something like, “This little elf believes that YOU are her very best present this Christmas!” Have fun surprising him throughout the rest of the month.

5. For the remaining days leading up until Christmas day, give your husband his own advent calendar of appreciation. Every morning give him a hand written card telling him specific areas of his life where he has blessed you and your children. This is a wonderful time to remember back over the year and point out what he has done right!

6. Give him a goody-a-day and let the children help you prepare them. They could be small pampering gifts such as a foot massage or they could be his favorite treats such as a can of pistachio nuts or a jar of pickles.

7. Tell him that his elves want to “lighten Santa’s pack” and ask him what three tasks he would like done around the house. You might take something off his “honey do” list and do it for him; vacuum his car, straighten his tools, fix his favorite dinner, call the plumber for the job he hasn’t been able to get done.

8. Rent his favorite movie, prepare his favorite treat and watch it with him (even if it’s not your kind of movie). Yes, a lot of things need to be done but just sit there and enjoy your husband!

9. Depending on whether your husband is an extrovert or introvert, choose a social activity that is geared toward his bent. If you are married to a man who gets rejuvenated with quiet, alone time, say “no” to too many parties and get-togethers in December and stay home with a smile.

If your husband thrives on noise, conversation and people, forgo your precious quiet evening at home and join him willingly. images gingerbread

10. Teach your children of all ages to be grateful for what they have and to remember those who have so much less. A grateful attitude in his family will be a huge encouragement to any man as they strive to provide for their family at Christmas.

Remember, it’s good for children to see Mommy kissing Santa underneath the Christmas tree!

Advent, Christmas, family time, Ideas for Legos and Advent

Yes, I know it is day eight of Advent but, perhaps, time has gotten away from you and that’s all right!images ornaments

The primary purpose of Advent is to prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus and the secondary purpose of Advent is to keep little children busy and engaged and happy and, as the mother of many, I am here to help on both accounts!

Here are some ideas for simple things you can do each day starting now!

I discovered a creative mother who has posted 25 projects using LEGOS during Advent! If you are starting late (as I am) it won’t matter to your children, especially if you introduce the projects with enthusiasm! I know our seven year old will be thrilled (as will the older boys in the household although they may not admit it).

Tommy Nelson publishers has some wonderful free coloring pages, simple advent ideas and, even, videos to watch! Free is always good :-) .

Here are a few of my last minute gift ideas from Christmas 2011. Children love the thrill of being on the giving end of Christmas so include them as you prepare and give simple treats.images.jpg mESSY CHRISTMAS

Remember, the mothers of old kept things simple during Advent. They lit a candle each day, gathered the children around, sang a carol and read a Bible verse. They may have had the children draw a picture of a tree and each day they colored another ornament onto the tree to mark off the days until Christmas (young children, especially, need a little help understanding how many days it is until Christmas).

So, mothers of young ones, don’t get overwhelmed. Take time to cuddle with your family (don’t forget your husband!) and enjoy the season.

Peaceful Celebrations

choose joy, Christmas, family time, living with less

On these last days of November, take a few moments to look ahead to the coming days of the Christmas celebration of Jesus. I give you permission to slow down, say “no” to too much of everything and to breathe in the quiet delights of Winter. Yes, it will take a strong will to deliberately choose more contemplative and restorative pleasures! I’ve listed a few ideas below…just to get you started!

!. Make an appointment every two or three days to sit down and listen to music for one entire hour. If small children are joining you provide them with a chunk of play dough or some crayons and paper and encourage them to listen as well.

2. Take a walk! If it’s icy, you don’t have to go far but do bundle up and stand in the crispy cold or rainy outdoors. Better yet, stand outside at night and listen to night sounds. You may hear the sounds of the city or the country but get in touch with whatever is out there!

3. Cook up a simple pot of soup or stew. If you know an elderly person or someone who is alone…take them a jar full and give them a hug to tell them you are thinking of them.

4. Pray. Thank God for His goodness toward you and ask Him for His peace. He will give it to you.

5. Count your blessings. I don’t know…maybe it’s my materialistic little self rearing its ugly head but I’ve found that I can very easily feel dissatisfied with what I have at this time of year. Contentment is a struggle for me when I am bombarded with images of expensive gifts and fancy homes.I have found that I have to make a deliberate choice to look at what I do have and to verbally talk about how blessed I am. This is good for my soul.

6. Look for simple things to change the atmosphere and feeling of your home. Sprinkle some cinnamon in a small pan of water and simmer it on the stove until the house smells “happy.” Read a good book to the children. Put food coloring in the homemade play dough or make simple construction paper and glue chains to decorate the house (but only if you don’t have to go to the store to get the paper and glue!).

It doesn’t cost any money to deep clean the house or sing while you work. Learn a new hymn together, go back and remember year by year where you spent each Christmas of your life.

7. Breathe deep and choose joy as you prepare to celebrate our Savior’s birth.

Fun with the Laura Ingalls Wilder books

cooking, family time, raising children, Reading Aloud

I’ve always loved the Little House books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I’ve read them to my children so many times that I almost have them memorized. The second series of books based on her parents and grandparents lives (The Caroline Years etc.) are good but they are not hers. Please don’t get the two of them confused! I’m loyal to Laura and her original books.

Although the Little House books made every meal sound mouth-watering, the Ingalls family ate plain, basic food over and over again, read from just a handful of books and lived in isolation for most of their lives. Can you imagine eating salt pork for almost every meal? It’s a very salty bacon-like meat but it was an important part of the Ingall’s diet.

To make the books come alive for my children when they were young (and to help them understand the deprivation all early settlers experienced), we spent a weekend living like pioneers. I considered this a 48 hour unit study. My kids loved it! Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. We didn’t use electricity for two days. This meant using candles and one oil lamp. We read by candlelight so they could experience how hard it would be to read in bed!

2. We used a wood stove to cook on. If you don’t have one you could use one burner on your stove and call it “the stove.”

3. We used only an outside hose for water and called it “the well.” We went to the well for water with a bucket and hauled that bucket of water inside the house.

4. We ate beans and cornbread three times a day for two days and a lot of bacon!

5. We used the Bible and an old McGuffey reader as our only books.

6. We all lived in one small part of the house (I marked off the average size of a log cabin so they could get a feel for small amount of space in an average log cabin). In that space we had one bed, some blankets and two books.

7. We tried to get up at dawn and go to bed soon after the sun went down.

8. I kept the children busy with “chores” (ie., scrubbing clothes by hand, hauling water, hand-washing the floor, cooking over the fire etc.

These are just a few of the things we did during our Little House Weekend. The sky is the limit as far as ideas go. Do a quick internet search for pioneer crafts and you will find a boggling array of ideas. The children absolutely loved these weekends even though we only got around to doing them about twice a year.

These days I am using some of those same ideas and teaching them to over fifty children in a home school co-op. It’s a bit of a challenge to get things done in less than an hour per class but we did make a green pumpkin pie last week as well as a simple candle holder out of air-drying clay. I read the passage where Ma Ingalls makes the pie in The Long Winter and I explained how important candles, lanterns and candle holders were before electricity was invented. The kids enjoyed it.

Making literature come alive doesn’t have to take a great deal of planning…with young children who’s got time for that? Simply read a book, turn out the lights, light a candle and bake a pan of cornbread. Your children will associate the study of the past (ie., history) with yummy smells, cosy evenings and the excitement of something different…and they will learn!

blessing your husband, I appreciate you!, inexpensive ideas for celebrations, making memories

We all want our loved ones to feel…well….loved, don’t we?

You can make every event a special, memorable occasion without spending a lot of money. Really! You can!

1.Focus on the person and how much you appreciate and love them.

a) For a birthday child, share details about the day they were born. Even if there was stress leading up to the birth, choose to remember that you wanted to see the baby, you wondered who the baby would look like and you were so glad the baby was finally born.

Deep inside every child is a strong need to know that they were wanted.

For a child whom you did not give birth to, be sure to share about the events that led to them being placed in your life. Again, do not focus on the hard things but, instead, talk about how glad you were to meet them and the plans and dreams you have for them.

b)Ask everyone who comes to the celebration to share one thing they appreciate about the person. For an anniversary, ask friends and relatives to leave a message on your voice mail sharing happy memories of the couple. Keep the recording as a keepsake.

Even a simple Father’s Day meal can be transformed when every child around the table lets Dad know why they love and appreciate him (hint; prepare your children ahead of time by helping them think of specific, non-silly things to say!).

2.Decorate! Even a few balloons make the room feel happy! A piece of white butcher paper can be decorated and hung in a doorway as a “birthday banner.”

A tradition in our home is to toilet paper the birthday child’s room so they wake up to a tangle of toilet paper!

The tradition began with my husband and I sneaking into our sleeping child’s room and decorating it with crepe paper and balloons. We did that for several years until one year we couldn’t afford the balloons and crepe paper so we substituted toilet paper instead.

AImage

This has become a loved tradition for our children and we have a lot of fun doing it together!

3.Prepare a goodie and light a candle! There’s just something about a cake or cookie or cupcake with a candle in it that says, “You are special” isn’t there? It’s worth rummaging through the junk drawer and finding that candle!

Everyone needs at least one day of the year where the words that are spoken remind them that they are cherished, appreciated and wanted! May your home ring with the sounds of simple celebrations!

cake pops, cooking, Easter, family, family time, fellowship, food, oyster shucking, Passover, roast lamb

It was a full and delightful Easter weekend. We kept busy. We shucked oysters! Phillip(24)was here from the wilds of the Idaho high prairie desert and craving them.

Lorna(26)can attest to the amount of concentration it takes to pry one open… We baked…lolli-cakes! Hannah(18)was swept away by one of her frequent creative moods and made approximately one hundred and fifty of them (we lost count).

We also cleaned. Please take note of the beautifully clean shelf on which these lolli-cakes reside! I slaved for two days cleaning and beautifying the IKEA shelf unit (aka clutter magnet) which lines a wall in our dining room. It made me happy all weekend just to look at it.

Flowers from my visiting son and more lolli-cakes!
We feasted but, unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of all of us stuffing our faces. My husband is a maestro at preparing a lamb roast!
Some of us also took time to sip a little tea and breathe. This picture attests to the fact that our Hannah does, indeed, have creative juices oozing from her fingertips!

When all the eating and sitting and talking and baking got to be too much for Patrick(almost 7), his eldest brother thoughtfully took him to the beach. We also worshipped and took communion with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ on Easter morning but the only documentation we have of that is the peace in our lives and the joy in our hearts. He is risen. He is risen, indeed!

Easter Recipes and Ideas

05 Thursday Apr 2012

Posted by nt12many in Crafts, Easter, Fun and Easy ways to Celebrate, Gifts to Make, healthy and quick recipes, Holy Bible, Homemaking, Practical Help, Recipes, Sharing Jesus

I’ve been enjoying doing a little Spring cleaning this week so I can relax and enjoy some Easter cooking in a more organized kitchen. An easy and delicious bread to make at Easter is the traditional Jewish Challah bread. It’s easy because it is made with yeast and eggs which makes it very light. It makes a beautiful centerpiece or a nice Easter gift. I have even made it with colored eggs tucked into the braid and then baked. It was beautiful that way.

Another wonderful cookie recipe that teaches the Easter story is a recipe for Resurrection Cookies(scroll down) or Empty Tomb Cookies.
These are really very simple meringue cookies that are put in the hot oven on Saturday night and then left in the oven after you turn the heat off. When the family wakes up on Easter and checks on the cookies, they find that they are hollow inside! Very fun (and a delicious bit of sugar to start your morning off with a zing!).

And to throw in an Easter activity that also counts as a history lesson, why not make eggs colored with onion skins? They really are beautiful and it is such fun to tell the children that great-grandma may (possibly) have colored her eggs this way! These would also make a sweet little gift to a shut-in or elderly friend, perhaps in a little basket?

When the kids were all much younger, my primary goal was to get the house clean and to read several books on the Easter story throughout the week. If we got some eggs colored or a special cake baked, it was a bonus. I was usually nursing a baby in those years so I did what I could with the time I had. Every season of life is different and we all have different challenges and priorities but Easter is such a wonderful world-changing event that impacted history forever, it is certainly worth a little extra effort!

Alleluia, Christ is Risen! How are you shouting His praises this Easter week?
