I’m over at my friend Lynette’s blog today talking about how herbs have blessed our family. Please join me at Victory Homemaking and hear the story of how I was able to cure my chronic sinus infections and raise eight children without using antibiotics.
This is the kind of practical knowledge that women used to pass down from generation to generation. What helpful advice do you share with other mamas that blesses them as they care for their children? Share your favorite tip in the comment section!

Hey Jill….you probably didn’t even know this…but I’ve been MAKING my own tinctures for 2-3 years now. And guess what for? Sinus’….we deal with sinus issues so much…I’m not quite as diligent as you to never use antibiotics, but I give it my best shot with tinctures first. Right now I have 2 jars of herbs brewing in glycerine…1 with no goldenseal, and 1 with (to have as “big guns” for actual infections) Katrina Bailey Funk, who taught a group of us ladies how to do this…encouraged it to be taken VERY often to be effective. So when we really have a true infection we’re dealing with, I hit it hard and often (like every 30 mins to an hour) for 2-3 days. Then we ease up. I bet our antibiotic use has been cut down to at least a 1/4 if not more. We use garlic oil and Mullin oil for ears too. Works like a charm
Oh yea, and don’t forget the Olive Oil and Oregano Oil as a rub on feet and chest for a cough…amazing!
OK…you’ve got me beat in that area….why oh why have I never thought to apply Oregano oil to the chest? I rub it around the temples and sinuses when a cold is coming on.
Where do you get your Oregano oil? I tried making some this summer but forgot about it and was afraid something was growing in it!

Oreganol P73 – 1 oz – Liquid
The above site is what I used to use till the MtView Co-op here in Cruces started making their own for a fraction of the cost. Wow…I can’t believe I use something you haven’t…ha!! I tell ya, that Katrina is just amazing with how much she knows about herbs. They moved to Germany last year and I sure miss her! Jill….I can’t imagine something growing in Oregano! Man, that stuff is SOOOO potent! I’d think it would be the opposite and kill whatever might be trying to grow in there.
Jill…sorry about this GIANT picture of the OO on your site! Yikes, I had no idea that that would happen by just posting the site address!
Not a problem Connie!
Oh, my little Connie friend…I am so proud of you! I haven’t made tinctures very often since I discovered the strength of Dr. Schultz’s concoctions (plus I am lazy) but I am so so amazed and impressed by you! I had no idea you’d come over to the crunchy-granola side of life although, to be fair, you have ALWAYS tried just about anything I’ve suggested.
Those sinuses certainly demand attention, don’t they? I will say that certain foods (such as gluten) seem to affect my sinuses as well.
